This building, which shows up in the trailer for Tokyo!, is called the Nakagin Capsule Tower. It’s about 10 minutes walking distance from where I used to live in Tokyo, and It’s freakin’ cool. Every single one of those compartments/rooms is a removable capsule that can be taken off, rearranged, etc. It was designed by Kisho Kurokawa, with the idea behind it being that the capsules could be replaced every 25 years, and by doing so the building itself could last for over 200 years.
Maintenance on the building, however, has not been great, and there have been talks of demolishing it for the past couple of years to make way for a bigger and better tower. I don’t know if it’s still there now, but I certainly hope it is. There’s nothing else like it. You can see a video interview with the architect here (don’t worry, it’s subtitled).
